What's new: NCERT has been replacing several long-standing titles class by class since 2023 - Class 1 English is now Mridang, Class 3 English is Santoor, and Classes 6-8 use an entirely refreshed lineup (Poorvi, Malhar, Ganita Prakash, Curiosity, Exploring Society: India and Beyond). Each class page below notes exactly where its syllabus stands.

Primary

Class 1 Foundational literacy and numeracy for the very first year of formal schooling, built around play-based, activity-led learning. Class 2 Builds on Class 1 foundations with slightly longer stories, two-digit numbers, and basic problem solving. Class 3 The first year of the Preparatory Stage, introducing a dedicated environmental studies book alongside language and math. Class 4 Deepens reading comprehension, multi-digit arithmetic, and environmental awareness. Class 5 The final year of the Preparatory Stage, consolidating literacy, numeracy, and environmental studies before the Middle Stage begins.

Upper Primary

Class 6 The first year of the Middle Stage, where Science and Social Science become dedicated subjects for the first time, alongside a completely refreshed book lineup. Class 7 Continues the Middle Stage with more advanced Science, Social Science, and Mathematics under the same rationalized book series as Class 6. Class 8 The final year of the Middle Stage, preparing students for the more exam-focused Secondary Stage that follows.

Secondary

Class 9 The first year of the Secondary Stage and CBSE board-pattern assessment, where subjects split into more specialized textbooks. Class 10 Board-exam year with a well-established textbook lineup covering the full Secondary Stage syllabus.

Senior Secondary

Class 11 The start of the Senior Secondary Stage, where students choose a stream (Science, Commerce, or Humanities/Arts) that shapes their subject combination. Class 12 The final board-exam year, directly feeding into competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and CUET depending on stream.

Alongside NCERT textbooks, many students supplement their preparation with standard reference books for extra practice - for example RD Sharma or RS Aggarwal for Mathematics, and Lakhmir Singh & Manjit Kaur for Science.
